History of London Fashion Week

London fashion impresses with its constant ironic rebellion, bright shows and designers’ special art approaches.

London is famous for its extraordinary designs.

Interestingly, the city’s fashion week is the youngest one, as it was established there much later than in Paris.

It is important to note that new designers play a major role in the development of London Fashion Week. After all, they set the tone and add a touch of modernity. If legendary names and brands participate in the event, it, obviously, becomes incredibly talked about and anticipated.

Londonka.uk will tell you more about the history of the brightest event in the London fashion industry.

The beginning of its history

The history of London Fashion Week began in 1984 when this bright and fascinating event was held for the first time.

Katharine Hamnett won the first Designer of the Year award.

Debut

Interestingly, the first London Fashion Week was held in a car park of the Commonwealth Institute.

Since then, this place has seen many famous designers, such as Betty Jackson, Jasper Conran and John Galliano.

At that time, London fashion was very clearly influenced by clubs, counterculture and visionary design.

Difficult period

The 1990s were very difficult for London Fashion Week. Very few designers took part in the event due to the economic downturn in 1992.

However, there was a silver lining too. After all, that year brought such names as Stella McCartney and Alexander McQueen. Their debut shows were held in 1992.

Moreover, Stella hired real supermodels, Naomi Campbell and Kate Moss.

It is important to note that in 1993, Naomi impressed all the viewers of the London Fashion Week when she walked the catwalk topless.

New names

1994 was marked by a change in the event venue. It was relocated to the London Natural History Museum.

In that period, the city lost some of its bright talents. In particular, McQueen decided to leave for New York. However, at the same time, London fashion was replenished with new names, such as John Rocha, Matthew Williamson and Julien Macdonald.

Fashion experiments

At the beginning of the new decade, designer Hussein Chalayan managed to surprise everyone with a real fashion “furniture” show.

Thus, during the show, one of the models stood on a coffee table, which turned into a triangular skirt.

Christopher Kane, who successfully experimented with bright colours, made a real splash during London Fashion Week. In addition, Gareth Pugh impressed everyone with his gothic-style clothing.

London Fashion Week also presented new designers, such as Jonathan Saunders, Erdem Moralıoğlu and Mary Katrantzou.

The return of the legend and subsequent changes

2009 was marked by a bright return of the Burberry brand. People could see its new products at London Fashion Week.

It should be noted that since then the event has changed its venue several times.

So, in different years, shows were held at various venues, such as Store Studios and the Burberry Makers House.

Constant development

New designers continue to participate in London fashion development. Moreover, this trend remains unchanged throughout the history of the show.

In particular, Matty Bovan and Wales Bonner impressed the public with their modern approach to creativity.

Thanks to such personalities, London Fashion Week continues to surprise and attract great interest.
