enclosed on all sides, planted, and quiet enough that you can hold a conversation without raising your voice, in the middle of Soho.

Independent and single-site, opened in 2020 — for a café this small: espresso and milk drinks, hand brews, batch filter, decaf and alternative milks as standard.

Cold brew is batched in advance and kept refrigerated rather than poured from a tap on demand — a detail that says a lot about how the bar is run.

Dogs are welcome, and the courtyard makes that painless for everyone.

What’s in the cup

Hideaway does not roast — and does not pretend to. It buys from Origin, a Cornish roaster that has been in British specialty long enough to be a safe reference point rather than a fashionable one, and the relationship shows in what the bar does with the coffee. The espresso side is handled with real attention to the boring fundamentals: extraction that doesn’t run long, milk textured to the right temperature rather than scalded into submission. A cortado is a good test order here for exactly that reason — small, unforgiving, nowhere to hide.

Beyond espresso there is more range than the size of the room suggests. Hand brews and batch filter give you the coffee without milk in the way, decaf is a normal part of the menu rather than an apologetic afterthought, and oat and other alternative milks are standard. Cold brew is made ahead and kept cold, which is the correct way to do it and noticeably less common than it should be. If you drink coffee black and want to know what is actually on, ask — a single-site café changes what it pours far more often than a chain does, and the person serving you will know the answer.

Who’s behind it

This is an owner-run independent with one address and no ambitions to become a group, which is the most important fact about it. There is no founder mythology on the website, no roastery, no second site: the whole proposition is a small team, a good roaster, and a courtyard nobody else thought to use. Opening in 2020 in a district that lives entirely on foot traffic, at the precise moment the foot traffic disappeared, was not a business plan so much as an act of faith — and the fact that it is now a fixture of the neighbourhood is the answer to whether it worked.

What it’s for

Working with a laptop. Yes — and this is the strongest single reason to come. There is free Wi-Fi, the room is quiet by Soho standards, and the large shared table in the middle is exactly the kind of surface people work at without being made to feel unwelcome. Two caveats: the number of seats is genuinely small, so a guaranteed spot means arriving off-peak, and if you plan to stay a while, the courtesy of a second order is the price of the table.

A conversation. The courtyard is the reason to bring someone here. Enclosed by old buildings, out of the wind and out of the noise, it is one of the few places in central Soho where two people can talk at a normal volume.

Sitting alone. Very well suited to it. A stool at the window, a filter coffee and a book is a completely normal way to use this place, and nobody will hurry you.

Takeaway. Works, but note the geometry: you have to leave the main street and walk into the courtyard to get here, so this is a destination stop rather than something you grab in passing.

The space

Inside is small and deliberately simple: one large shared table in the middle of the room, a handful of high stools along the window, pale surfaces, not much decoration. That is the entire indoor capacity, and it is worth knowing before you arrive with a group. Outside, the courtyard carries the rest — tables among planting, surrounded by old brick, shared with the other small businesses that occupy the same passage, among them a chocolatier, a barber, a gallery and a restaurant.

The atmosphere is calm rather than buzzy, and the crowd tilts towards people who work in the surrounding studios and offices — creative-industry Soho, in and out through the day. The trade-off is honest: in bad weather the courtyard is unusable and the café shrinks to one table and a window ledge, so a wet weekday lunchtime can mean standing. In good weather it is one of the nicest places to sit in the West End.

Beyond coffee

Food is a bought-in pastry counter rather than a kitchen, and it is a good one: croissants sweet and savoury, cinnamon buns, danishes, cakes — the peanut butter cake has a following — and a few granola-bar-style things for people passing through. There are savoury options substantial enough to work as lunch, but this is not a brunch restaurant and does not try to be. Come for coffee and eat something with it; don’t come specifically to be fed.

When to come

The pattern here is a working-day one with a weekend tail. It opens early on weekdays for the commute and the studio crowd, opens later at weekends, and closes in the late afternoon every day — this is not an evening café, and planning a post-dinner coffee here will not work. The quietest stretch, and the best one for a table, is the middle of a weekday morning once the first wave has gone.

Seasonally, the courtyard divides the year in half. From spring to early autumn the outdoor tables roughly double the usable space and the whole place feels generous; in winter and in rain it becomes a genuinely tiny café. Check the opening hours block on this page for the current schedule before a weekend visit.

Getting there

Central Soho, a couple of minutes on foot from Piccadilly Circus and not much further from Oxford Circus, Leicester Square or Tottenham Court Road. The courtyard is reached through a narrow passage off one of the main Soho streets, and it is signposted under two different names — which, along with the modest frontage, is why so many people walk past it for years. Follow the passage in; the café is on your left as the courtyard opens out.

Good to know

Three practical notes. First, the Wi-Fi is free but password-protected, so ask at the counter rather than hunting for an open network. Second, if you are coming for the courtyard, check the weather rather than the calendar: the difference between a sunny Tuesday and a wet one is the difference between a spacious café and a very small one. Third, dogs are welcome, and the courtyard makes it comfortable for the dog as well as the table next to you.

One more thing worth understanding about the location. This courtyard is a survival of the older street pattern in an area that has been rebuilt around it many times over, and the businesses that occupy it are all small and independent for the same reason: the rents are for a place nobody can find by accident. That is precisely the quality being sold here — the café is called Hideaway because it is one.

Questions and answers

Do they roast their own coffee?

No. The beans come from Origin Coffee Roasters in Cornwall. For a single-site café that is the honest and usually better choice: it buys from a specialist and concentrates on brewing well.

Can I work here on a laptop?

Yes, and it is one of the better options in central Soho for it. There is free Wi-Fi and a large shared table. The limit is seats, not policy: arrive outside the busiest hours if you need a guaranteed place.

How many people can actually sit down?

Indoors, very few: one big communal table and a short row of window stools. The courtyard outside adds a good number of seats, so total capacity depends entirely on the weather.

Is it hard to find?

It is easy to walk past. The café is in a courtyard off the street, reached by a passage that is signposted under two different names. Once you are in the courtyard it is obvious.

Is there decaf and non-dairy milk?

Yes to both — decaf is a normal part of the menu here, and alternative milks are standard rather than a special request.

Can I bring a dog?

Yes. The courtyard makes it easy, and dogs are a common sight here.

Is there proper food?

There is a pastry counter with sweet and savoury options, brought in rather than baked on site, and some of it is filling enough for lunch. There is no kitchen and no full brunch menu.

Is it open in the evening?

No. This is a daytime café that closes in the late afternoon, seven days a week.
