first site of what is now a ten-strong group that has never opened outside the City of London.

Founded by an Australian and an Irishman who met behind the bar at Caravan — Antipodean café standards crossed with Irish hospitality.

Roasts its own coffee at its own London roastery, in three separate profiles: one built for milk, one for black, one for filter.

Runner-up for Best Independent Coffee Shop in Europe at the Allegra awards, later Europe’s Best Independent Café, and a Financial Times pick among the world’s best coffee shops.

Engineered for volume: two doors, bench-and-ledge seating, and a bar that keeps its accuracy through the morning surge.

A London Living Wage employer; milk arrives in reusable buckets and retail coffee is sold in tins instead of bags.

What’s in the cup

Rosslyn started out buying bespoke blends from other roasters — a Cornish house blend for milk, a separate roast for black, a third for the filter brewer — and in 2020 it took the whole thing in-house and began roasting at its own London roastery. The three-profile structure survived the move, and it is the single most useful thing to understand here. A coffee that tastes complete under steamed milk is not the same coffee that tastes complete on its own, and Rosslyn refuses to pretend otherwise: order a flat white and a black coffee side by side and you are drinking two different roasts, on purpose.

In practice that means espresso and milk drinks pulled with unusual consistency for the volume this bar turns over, batch brew as the fast route to a black cup, and filter as the slower one. Seasonal single origins rotate through, so the honest instruction is the same one that works in any serious coffee bar: ask what is on filter today rather than reading a list. The hardware backs it up — a high-output espresso machine designed for exactly this kind of morning, dedicated grinders, a batch brewer and single-cup brewers on the back bar.

Who’s behind it

Rosslyn was set up in 2018 by Mat Russell and James Hennebry, who met working at Caravan Coffee Roasters in London. Russell is Australian, Hennebry Irish, and both trained in Melbourne; the name comes from the Melbourne street where Hennebry first learned to pull shots. Their stated formula is unglamorous and accurate — Australian café technique plus Irish hospitality, or as they put it themselves, being nice to people and making good coffee.

The follow-through is visible in the way the business is run rather than in anything on the wall. Rosslyn pays the London Living Wage and has been recognised as a Living Wage champion; it swapped disposable milk bottles for reusable buckets from its dairy and retail bags for tins. None of that changes the taste of your flat white, but it explains why the same faces stay behind this bar for years, which very much does.

What it’s for

Coffee on the way in. This is the core scenario and the one the room was designed for. Two doors, a short queue that moves, a cup in your hand, and back out into the Square Mile. If you have eleven minutes between the station and your desk, this works.

A short sit. There is seating — a bench, a ledge, a few perches — and it is genuinely pleasant for twenty minutes with a pastry. It is not comfortable for two hours, and it isn’t meant to be.

A quick meeting. Fine for the kind of conversation that lasts one coffee. For anything longer, or anything confidential, the room is too tight and too busy — you will be overheard.

Laptop work. Straight answer: no. This is not a working café. The seating is benches and ledges, the layout exists to move people through, and occupying a spot through the mid-morning peak would be uncomfortable for you and unfair on the queue. If you need a table and three hours, choose somewhere built for it.

The space

The room is small — a wedge of about forty square metres — and every decision in it serves flow. Floor-to-ceiling glass, pale walls, wood, shelves carrying retail coffee, chocolate and handmade ceramics, and two doors so that arriving customers and leaving ones aren’t fighting each other. It reads as calm in a photograph and as busy in person, because at peak the whole room is a queue with a few seats attached.

The honest weakness is capacity. If your idea of a coffee shop is a table by a window and an hour to yourself, this branch will disappoint you, and the disappointment is structural rather than fixable. What you get instead is a bar where the drink is made properly at a speed that would break most specialty shops, and where the person making it is likely to recognise you by the third visit.

Beyond coffee

Food is deliberately kept in a supporting role. There is a counter of pastries and cakes to go with the coffee and nothing that pretends to be a breakfast destination — no cooked plates, no brunch menu, no reason to come here hungry rather than thirsty. The retail shelf is the more interesting half of the non-coffee offer: whole beans and ground coffee in tins, gift subscriptions in three, six and twelve-month runs, and mugs made by a London ceramic artist.

When to come

This is a City-rhythm coffee bar and its clock is the working day. It opens early — well before most of London’s cafés — because the commuter tide arrives before nine, and the deepest crush is mid-morning. Early is genuinely better here: the same coffee, a fraction of the wait, and staff who have time to talk about what’s on filter.

Weekends are the trap worth knowing. The Square Mile empties on Saturday and Sunday, and Rosslyn’s estate reflects that: most sites are weekday-only, this one is among the handful that opens on Saturday, and nothing in the group opens on Sunday. Check the opening hours block on this page before making a weekend trip, and expect a much quieter, more relaxed room if you do come on a Saturday.

Getting there

Deep in the Square Mile, a few minutes on foot from St Paul’s Cathedral and roughly midway between Mansion House and Blackfriars stations, with Bank and St Paul’s also within an easy walk. The frontage is glass and modest, so look for the shopfront rather than a sign — most first-time visitors find it by walking to the cathedral and heading down towards the river.

Good to know

Three things make the visit better. First, ask what is on filter and what the black roast is doing this month — the seasonal rotation is the reason to come back, and the team will happily talk you through it. Second, if you like what you drink, take it home: the tins are on the shelf beside you and the subscription exists for people who would rather not think about it again for a year. Third, treat this branch as a stand-up bar with seats rather than a café with a queue — plan the visit that way and it never disappoints.

One piece of context that explains the whole group: Rosslyn has stayed inside one square mile of London for its entire existence. That focus is why ten shops can share a roast rotation, a supply chain and a service standard, and why the coffee at any of them tastes like a decision rather than an accident.

Questions and answers

Do they roast their own coffee?

Yes. Rosslyn began with bespoke blends made for it by other roasters and moved roasting in-house in 2020, at its own London roastery. It now roasts three distinct profiles — for milk, for black and for filter.

Can I work here on a laptop?

Realistically, no. Seating is benches and ledges, the room is built for turnover and the morning peak fills it completely. A short email between meetings is fine; a working session is not what this room is for.

Is there anywhere to sit at all?

Yes, but not much: a bench and a ledge in a space of roughly forty square metres. Off-peak your chances are decent, at peak assume you are taking it away.

Espresso or filter — what should I order first?

If you want to taste the roasting, take it black: batch brew for speed, filter if you want the seasonal coffee at its most detailed. If you drink milk, the house espresso is roasted specifically for it, which is exactly why it works.

Is it open at weekends?

This is one of the few Rosslyn sites that opens on Saturday. No site in the group opens on Sunday, because the City has almost nobody in it. The schedule block on this page has the current pattern.

Can I get breakfast?

Not a cooked one. There are pastries and cakes to go with the coffee, and that is the whole food offer here by design.

Can I buy beans to take home?

Yes — whole bean and ground, sold in reusable tins rather than bags, with gift subscriptions available in three, six and twelve-month terms.

Are all the Rosslyn shops like this one?

The coffee is shared; the rooms are not. This is the original and one of the more sit-down-capable sites. Several of the others are express bars inside office buildings and stations, built purely around speed.

<span
