then opened this place with Jeremy Challender and Klaus Kuhnke in 2011.

A barista training centre operates in the basement, so the café doubles as one of London’s coffee classrooms.

The coffee is Square Mile, one of the roasteries that built the modern London scene — and café and roastery now sit under the same corporate roof.

A serious brew bar: espresso alongside hand-poured filter, with the method chosen to suit the coffee rather than the other way round.

A large room by speciality standards — around fifty seats over a wide, window-lit ground floor.

Guest espresso and rotating filter mean the offer genuinely changes; the cup you liked last month may not be there this month.

What’s in the cup

Prufrock does not roast on site, and the reason is more interesting than the fact: the café pours Square Mile, and the two businesses are now part of the same company. That is about as short as a supply chain gets in London — the beans are roasted in the same city by people the bar talks to constantly, and the house espresso has for years been Square Mile’s Red Brick, the blend that has probably defined the taste of “London espresso” for more people than any other.

Alongside the house espresso there is a guest espresso, which is where the bar plays: a second grinder means you can order the familiar thing or the unfamiliar thing at the same counter. Filter is treated as a discipline rather than a fallback, with hand-brewed coffees dialled to a chosen method — V60, Chemex, AeroPress and, in past incarnations of the bar, more esoteric kit besides. If you want to taste what the roastery is actually excited about, that is the side of the menu to read.

The practical answers most people need: decaf espresso is available, oat and soy sit alongside dairy, and there is hot chocolate for anyone who came along with a coffee drinker rather than as one. The one thing worth doing is asking what is on filter today. In a bar with rotation built into its design, that question always has a real answer.

Who’s behind it

Gwilym Davies is the name that matters. He won the world title in 2009 not from a flagship espresso bar but from street carts in east London markets, which is part of why his reputation carried the weight it did — the win read as proof that craft, not equipment budget, decided the cup. Prufrock was the permanent version of that idea, opened with Jeremy Challender and Klaus Kuhnke, and it deliberately combined three functions that usually live apart: a café, a retail counter, and a school.

The teaching arm is not decorative. The basement houses a barista resource and training operation, and over the years the bar has staffed itself with competition-level people from across Europe — national barista champions and brewers’ cup winners have worked these machines. That is why the standard behind the counter tends to hold even on the days you happen to walk in; the place is built to produce baristas, not just to employ them.

What it’s for

Tasting coffee properly. The most honest reason to come. Sit at the brew bar, ask what is on filter, and treat the visit as the thing itself rather than the backdrop to something else. Very few London rooms are set up this deliberately for it.

A weekday meeting. The room is genuinely large and the seating is varied — window tables, wall benches, small rounds, counter perches — so a one-to-one conversation works without your neighbours joining in.

Laptop work — yes, but on battery. There is Wi-Fi, and on quiet weekday stretches the room absorbs laptops without complaint. The catch that catches people out is power: this has never been a café wired for all-day plug-in sessions, and sockets are scarce to non-existent depending on where you sit. Arrive charged and plan in hours, not days.

Breakfast or lunch nearby. There is a kitchen, and the local office population uses it. If you work in the area, this functions as a lunch room as much as a coffee bar.

Buying beans. Retail is part of the original concept — the coffee you liked is meant to leave with you.

The space

By speciality standards the room is big: roughly two thousand square feet over two levels, with the café on the ground floor and the training operation below. Wide windows run the full width of the front, so daylight does most of the work, with bulbs strung down the centre of the room for the rest. A counter splits the space, and seating comes in several registers — a bench outside, tables in the windows, perches by the brew bar, small round tables, and a bench along the back and side walls.

The décor carries two good stories. A large mural by artist Martin Kingdom covers a wall with a fantastical coffee creation myth, and the shelving is repurposed from the unit’s previous occupant, which was an adult bookshop — a piece of local history the fit-out chose to keep rather than erase.

The honest weakness is noise. When the room fills, sound builds fast in a hard-surfaced space, and the atmosphere shifts from calm to busy without much warning. Anyone who needs quiet should aim for the edges of the day rather than the middle.

Beyond coffee

Food is cooked here, not bought in. A chef works a rotating short menu — breakfast in the morning register, lunch after it, built around scratch cooking and ingredients the café is deliberate about sourcing. It has been described, fairly, as an English take on small plates: things that come out quickly, are meant to be eaten at a café table, and are not trying to be a restaurant.

Pastries and cakes are on the counter and vary by the day. In short: yes, you can eat properly here, and the kitchen is a real part of the operation rather than a display cabinet.

When to come

This is a weekday-market café, and it lives by that rhythm. Doors open before the working day starts on weekdays, which is the best window for a calm brew-bar conversation with a barista. From mid-morning the local office population arrives, and around the middle of the day the street market outside is in full swing — that is the loudest, fullest stretch and the one to avoid if you want to sit and taste.

Weekends start later and feel entirely different: the offices are empty, the market is gone, and the guests skew towards people who came specifically for the coffee. If you are visiting London for the coffee rather than working near it, a weekend morning is the better trip. Current opening times are in the schedule block on this page.

Getting there

You are on the Farringdon side of Clerkenwell, in the strip between the jewellery quarter and Holborn. Farringdon and Chancery Lane stations are both a short walk, with Holborn a little further. The best landmark is the weekday street market that runs right outside the door — if you can see food stalls and a lunchtime crowd, you are in the right place. The shopfront itself is wide and glassy, which makes it easier to spot than most speciality bars.

Good to know

Three things worth knowing before you go. First, ask what is on the guest espresso and on filter — the rotation is the point of the bar, and the staff are unusually happy to talk about it. Second, if you plan to work, charge your device first; the Wi-Fi is not the problem, the sockets are. Third, the training school downstairs runs courses that are open to people outside the trade, so if you have ever wanted to learn why your home espresso tastes wrong, this is one of the places in London that will actually teach you.

One piece of context that explains the café’s standing: when Prufrock opened, combining a café, a retail counter and a school in one unit was not the norm, and the pairing of a World Barista Champion with a leading roastery gave the London scene a physical address. More than a decade on, the room still functions as that address.

Questions and answers

Do they roast their own coffee?

No. The coffee is Square Mile, roasted in London, and the two businesses are now part of the same company — so it is bought-in beans, but from about as close to home as a London café gets.

Can I work here with a laptop?

For an hour or two on a quieter weekday, yes — there is Wi-Fi and enough seating. For a full working day, no: power sockets are scarce, and the room gets loud and full around the middle of the day.

Is there room to sit?

Yes, unusually so for a speciality bar — around fifty seats across several styles of table. It still fills at the weekday lunch peak.

Espresso only, or is there filter?

Both, and filter is taken seriously: hand-brewed coffees with the method matched to the bean. Ask what is on today.

Is there decaf and non-dairy milk?

Yes to both — decaf espresso is on the menu, and oat and soy sit alongside dairy.

Can I learn to make coffee here?

Yes.
