Its ideological inspiration was William Morris, who advocated for the fusion of aesthetics and craftsmanship. These very principles became the foundation for the establishment of the Central School of Arts and Crafts in London in 1896. Later, in 1908, the school moved into a new building designed by architect William Lethaby — a like-minded associate of Morris and co-founder of the Art Workers’ Guild. As Director, he promoted a creative approach to crafts such as bookbinding, typography, jewellery making, and stained glass. His goal was to overcome the artificial divide between fine and applied arts, which ultimately became a key principle of the new art education.

The history of fashion education at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design began in 1931, when Muriel Pemberton — a graduate of the Royal College of Art — started teaching fashion illustration. Initially, this consisted of only a few classes per week, but by 1946, she had founded a fully-fledged fashion department. By that time, education in this field had moved away from Victorian traditions, where the primary focus was on sewing and textile production for women, and transformed into modern professional training for designers. Despite her young age and lack of experience, the enthusiast managed to lay the foundation for a new educational system focused on developing creativity and individual vision.

The strengthening of Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design’s authority also occurred thanks to the development of the sculpture department. A decisive role in this process was played by Frank Martin, who took over the department in 1952. Just a year later, he invited the young sculptor Anthony Caro to teach, who subsequently became one of the key figures in contemporary art. Under the influence of new ideas, the college quickly gained a reputation as a leading centre for the “new generation” of sculptors. Their work was characterised by an experimental approach: the use of bright colours, the rejection of traditional plinths, and the placement of sculptures directly on the floor. New materials were also actively employed, including plastic and fibreglass, which opened up wider possibilities for creativity.

A Time of Innovation and Breakthrough at Central Saint Martins

In the 1970s and 1980s, Central Saint Martins established itself as one of the progressive centres of art education, largely due to female tutors who shaped a new vision of art’s role in society. Among them, a special place was held by Tina Keane, Anna Thew, Anne Tallentire, Joanna Greenhill, and Pam Skelton. Their teaching activities were not limited to imparting technical skills — they laid the groundwork for critical thinking and the reimagining of social norms. Thanks to their influence, a noticeable shift in the gender balance occurred within British art. This approach stood in stark contrast to the trends of the time, particularly the Young British Artists (yBAs) movement, where commercial interests played an increasingly prominent role.

An important milestone in the institution’s history was the merger in 1989 of the Central School of Art and Design and Saint Martin’s School of Art, which gave rise to the modern Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design. Both institutions had been part of the London Institute since 1986 — an association created to coordinate the capital’s leading art schools. This merger not only consolidated resources but also strengthened the interdisciplinary approach to learning, which became one of the college’s defining features.

A new stage of development began in 2011 when Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design moved to a modernised building at Granary Square in the King’s Cross area. The former 19th-century granary was transformed into a state-of-the-art educational space that brought almost all disciplines together under one roof. The consolidation of previously scattered campuses made it possible to create a single, dynamic community of students and staff. In this environment, ideas, experiments, and innovations circulate much faster, fostering the emergence of new forms of art and design.

Vogue India

Recognition and Significance of Central Saint Martins

Central Saint Martins has established itself as one of the most influential centres of art education in the world, and its fashion school as a true symbol of innovation and professional training for designers. Since its inception in the 1930s, thanks to the foundation laid by Muriel Pemberton, it has formed a unique educational model that combines creative freedom, experimentation, and a deep understanding of the industry. The college’s graduates have become iconic figures in contemporary fashion. Among them are Alexander McQueen, whose graduate collection launched a new era of British design; Phoebe Philo, who defined the aesthetic of modern women’s fashion at Chloé and Céline; and Riccardo Tisci, who headed Givenchy and Burberry. A new generation of designers, including Gareth Pugh, Christopher Kane, and Mark Fast, is also confidently making its mark on the international stage.

Dazed

Central Saint Martins is one of the most influential hubs of fashion education in the world, where new generations of designers are shaped.
